Work is officially underway on the first stage of the Fowlers Road to Fairwater Drive Link Road project south of Wollongong in New South Wales.
Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash said the project will provide a vital connection from suburbs of West Dapto to the Dapto town centre, the Princes Highway and the M1 Motorway.
“The Coalition Government is pleased to be supporting this critical local road upgrade for the Illawarra region to the tune of $10 million through the $630 million National Stronger Regions Fund,” Minister Nash said.
“It was a pleasure to join representatives of Wollongong City Council here today to see work get underway on this long-awaited project, which is a key part of the West Dapto Access Strategy.
“Housing affordability is a national issue at present, and one of the biggest benefits to come out of this project is the fact it will remove a major impediment to rezoning.
“This will mean more houses can be delivered, giving locals even more opportunity to buy their own home at a reasonable price.
“I aim to build the kinds of regional communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, this upgrade will support the ongoing development of one of the region's fastest growing areas.”
Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward MP said the completed road link is expected to be used by about 9,000 vehicles a day.
“A road providing greater flood immunity for the current and future residents of West Dapto has been in planning for many years,” Mr Ward said.
“This project will provide a new four-lane, 1.3 kilometre road with a cycling and pedestrian path, as well as two bridges crossing the South Coast rail line, Mullet Creek and the floodplain.
“This will improve commute times for residents while also reducing congestion on the local road network.
“It will also create almost 450 jobs, including 92 direct jobs, during the construction phase. This is a great outcome for the community and I am delighted to see construction get underway,” Mr Ward said.
The Coalition Government has committed $10 million to the project. The New South Wales Government has committed $22.5 million directly to the project as well as an additional $600,000 for planning and $3.2 million through an interest subsidy.
