NSW: Infrastructure Developments meet Population Upsurge

As Australia’s best performing economy, Sydney shows strong population upsurges, demanding infrastructure developments to accommodate continued growth. The NSW Government’s vision of a growing Sydney will see over $73.3 billion injected into infrastructure works that are expected to revitalise public transport, roads, supply chain infrastructure as well as school and hospital precincts. Infrastructure developments across the state will be discussed at the NSW Major Projects Conference 2016. Now in its 8th year, the conference is New South Wales’ largest major projects and infrastructure event and continues to attract over 250 delegates annually.

With exciting developments for the state on the agenda, expert speakers and policymakers will profile projects such as the WestConnex Project, the largest transport and urban renewal project in Australia. To date, WestConnex has let contracts to projects valued at almost $9 billion and is expected to deliver more than $20 billion in economic benefits. The project forms a critical part of the NSW Government’s integrated transport solution to keep Sydney moving by creating more than 10,000 jobs, easing congestion and connecting communities.

Similarly, the new Western Sydney Airport in Badgerys Creek will stimulate major economic activity as well as provide employment opportunities for those living closer to Western Sydney. It is estimated that by 2063, 60,000 jobs would be created directly generating billions of dollars in economic activity for the state as a whole.

A key highlight of the conference will be a status update report on Sydney’s $1.6 billion CBD and South East Light Rail Project. With Sydney’s population expected to grow by 1.6 million over the next two decades, a modern efficient transport system such as the light rail is expected to transform the city by offering a high capacity, reliable and a sustainable mode of public transport. The project would also reduce the city’s reliance on bus services.

The conference will provide an overview of the Sydney Metro – Australia's largest public transport project. The new railway network is expected to revolutionise the way Sydney travels as the first fully-automated railway system. The plan would extend the metro line from the North West, underneath Sydney Harbour and the CBD to Bankstown. The blueprint also includes a total of seven new stations and would see existing lines such as Bankstown upgraded with increased services. The project is expected to be completed in 2024.

The NSW and Federal Governments, Transurban and the Westlink M7 Shareholders are constructing two nine kilometre tunnels to link the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga and the Hills M2 at West Pennant Hills. In light of this, the NSW Major Projects Conference will see a NorthConnex Project update. On completion, the $3 billion dollar project will link Sydney’s north to the orbital network and will remove up to 5000 trucks a day from Pennant Hills Rd.

As home to around 325 towers of 100 metres or taller in height, with most located in Sydney or Melbourne, Australia will soon be home to many new skyscrapers with additional towers currently in the pipeline. Senior Lecturer Dr Philip Oldfield, from UNSW Built Environment, will address the future of skyscraper construction in the country. The presentation will consider different factors in high-rise planning in Australian cities, contending that skyscrapers could be the answer to the affordability crisis in cities.

Showcasing Sydney as Australia’s gateway to the world, Barangaroo is one of the world’s foremost waterfront renewal projects. The conference will host a presentation featuring an overview of the latest project updates of the Barangaroo redevelopment from Chief Executive Craig van der Laan, from the Barangaroo Delivery Authority – NSW.

Looking to the future of the state, the conference will expound on green initiatives currently underway. NSW’s largest 175 megawatt wind farm consisting of 119 turbines would supply power to more than 75000 homes and help NSW meet its Renewal Energy Targets. The essential ingredients for the construction of smart cities will also be examined as the conference looks at developing NSW’s future cities.

An unmissable event for industry professionals, the 8th Annual NSW Major Projects Conference 2016 will be held on the 15th and 16th of November at Dolton House, Hyde Park in Sydney.
