Minister for Urban Infrastructure Paul Fletcher has announced that environmental approval has been granted to excavate materials from the unused Hornsby Quarry to construct a new recreational precinct.
Tunnelling works at the Hornsby Quarry are set to begin early next year as part of the NorthConnex project that is set to deliver Australia’s longest road tunnel at 9km’s long. The tunnel will link the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills; with estimates suggesting up to 5,000 trucks will be taken off roads in the area each day.
Materials excavated as part of the tunnelling works will be relocated to form the base of a new recreational facility for Hornsby.
Mayor of Hornsby Shire Council Steve Russell spoke of the project, stating “The community were front and centre in our plans for reusing the quarry site.”
“This is a long standing issue for residents and it’s great to see a win-win situation come as a result of the NorthConnex project.”
All works on the projects will be done during the hours of 7am-6pm and residents can get constant and accurate updates from the council. The projects are being funded by the Australian and New South Wales Governments as well as the Hornsby Shire Council.
