Wynyard Walk officially opened

Posted On September 22, 2016

Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance have today unveiled Sydney’s newest pedestrian tunnel.

The Wynyard Walk tunnel allows pedestrians to now walk between Wynyard Station and Barangaroo in roughly 6 minutes, at a normal walking speed.

The tunnel is fully accessible, so those with disabilities or movement impairments will have no trouble taking advantage of its benefits.

Wynyard Station is one of Sydney’s most popular transport hubs, which will now be linked to the western harbour front, which is increasing in popularity year on year.

The tunnel is nine-metres wide, and will be able to be utilised by up to 20,000 people each hour.

Previously commuters had to navigate through busy roads and steep inclines as part of their daily journey towards the station, but this is no longer an issue thanks to the 180 metre long tunnel.

The tunnel will be open from 5am-9pm 7 days a week, as works are still ongoing on the Clarence Street entrance to the tunnel. Once that entrance is completed, the tunnel will be available 24/7.

The construction of the tunnel was phase one of the project to transform Wynyard Station. Phase two will see the stations platform get an upgrade to its ventilation and cooling, as well as general lighting upgrades and refurbishments.

Phase two will be completed by the middle of 2017.
