Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance today unveiled the next generation of trains that will operate in NSW from 2019.
The State government has today announced that the $2.3billion contract will be awarded to the RailConnect consortium, with the manufacturing of the trains set to be done in South Korea.
Constance stated that the offshore bid was chosen as it represented a “25% saving” compared to alternative bids.
He stressed that there were to be 200 local jobs created as part of the process, with maintenance on the completed trains set to be done in Kangy Angy, located on the Central Coast.
Some new features that will be included in the trains:
Mr Constance was optimistic that the new features will pave the way for more people to travel via rail and ditch their cars.
The trains will begin rolling out in 2019, and will operate between Newcastle, the Central Coast, South Coast and the Blue Mountains. The roll out is expected to take 3 years.
