The Innovation Fund is available to 19 small councils in rural and regional NSW with populations of less than 10,000 residents.
Minister for Local Government Paul Toole said round one of the scheme will fund $2 million across 13 projects in more than 20 communities.
“Small regional and rural communities face unique issues and challenges and the Innovation Fund recognises creative projects that can have a big impact in small communities,” Mr Toole said.
Successful projects include a collaborative environmental and waste system across a number of small Aboriginal communities, energy efficiency scheme to replace all council building and streetlights with LED lighting, and creating a data link between two neighbouring council offices.
Applications for the second round of funding will open later in the year with a further $2 million in grants available.
