The proposal would set defined benefits payments for low severity injuries and retain lump sum compensation for the most seriously injured.
‘No-fault’ compensation would also be introduced, extending protection to an extra 7000 road users a year who are not covered under the current scheme.
Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said the no-fault scheme would allow injured road users to access insurance benefits faster, including rehabilitation services.
“As a result of reduced scheme costs, we will see a much higher proportion of the premium dollar going to injured road users. The majority of NSW motorists can also expect to see a substantial reduction in their Green Slip premiums.”
An expert panel will make recommendations on the proposed legislation with the possibility of the new scheme coming into effect across NSW from July 2017.
