Works scheduled for Spit Bridge upgrade

Posted On April 14, 2016

Works to upgrade and maintain Spit Bridge across Middle Harbour are set to begin next week.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the work will involve the repairing and maintenance of support beams.

“The Spit Bridge was built in 1958 and provides an essential crossing of Middle Harbour for Northern Beaches residents,” the spokesperson said.

“To ensure the structure remains strong and in good working condition, maintenance work will be carried out on the shared concrete path.”

The $1.6 million maintenance project will involve the strengthening and painting of existing metal support beams.

The works will also include the waterproofing of a nearby pedestrian path to provide a stronger and safer surface for pedestrians and cyclists.

“Work will be carried out on weekdays from 7am to 6pm and Saturdays from 8am to 1pm, with the project expected to take five months to complete, weather permitting,” they said.

“Minimal traffic impacts are expected as most of the work will be carried out beneath the bridge from scaffolding.”

Roughly 70,000 motorists utilise the bridge each day.
