Upgrades to improve Mount Panorama race course is now complete, following $6.2 million worth of construction works.
Minister for Regional Development, Fiona Nash, said the Australian government had invested $3 million into the upgrade.
“I used to drive around this race track for fun when I was at University here in Bathurst, but at a slightly slower speed than the cars do during the Bathurst 1000,” Nash said.
“I'm so happy to be able to announce the completion of the upgrade to Mount Panorama. This project will bring more people to the track and that's good news for businesses in Bathurst.”
The Bathurst 1000, held at Mount Panorama, attracts over 200,000 spectators annually and injects more than $21 million into the local economy each year.
Federal Member for Calare, John Cobb, said the course was an Australiana icon and leading drive of tourism in the area.
“This upgrade provided a new asphalt overlay of the track surface to meet Australian racing industry standards and replaced the safety wall and sand trap in Pit Straight,” Cobb said.
“A passenger lift was installed on the Harris Park pedestrian bridge to provide disabled access to both sides of the circuit from outside of the track, while additional works were carried out in the Paddock Area with gravel laid, the campground area roads sealed and lighting installed.”
The first event held at Mount Panorama was in 1938.
