The New South Wales government has announced plans to build a light rail network in Parramatta.
New South Wales Premier, Mike Baird, unveiled the preferred route for the Parramatta Light Rail project.
"We’re delivering a modern, efficient and reliable light rail network for Western Sydney," Baird said.
"The light rail network will help Parramatta reach its potential as Sydney’s second CBD and be a major boost to existing public transport services in Western Sydney."
The rail network will link Parramatta’s CBD to key hubs in Sydney Olympic Park, Westmead Hospital, Western Sydney University and Strathfield.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, said the preferred route of the project will provide over 22 kilometres of services.
"Light rail will be a fantastic new public transport option for Western Sydney - we’ve started building in Sydney’s CBD, Newcastle light rail is on track and now progress for Western Sydney is about to crack on," Constance said.
Four rail corridors for the light rail project were short-listed, with the preferred network including a combination of two of these options.
The New South Wales government has already reserved $1 billion towards the project.
