The NSW Government is getting on with plans to upgrade the transport interchange at Balmain East, building on the new wharf, which opened to customers this year.
“Customers and residents using the Balmain East Wharf will benefit from a new accessible ramp and stairs to the newly upgraded ferry wharf, a widened turning circle for better bus access, improved bus shelter, and upgrades to lighting and CCTV,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
“Thank you to everyone who has provided feedback on the plans for the project when they were placed on public display last month.
“Your feedback was considered and as a result, some design changes have been made to improve the visual appearance of key features included in the upgrade,” the spokesperson said.
“Planning approval has been obtained and we are excited that we can now move on to the next phase of the project.”

Early work, including relocation of existing utilities and site investigations, is underway. Major construction is planned to start in early 2016 to minimise impact to public space during the New Year celebrations.
“These improvements will make a real difference for Balmain East customers, particularly people with limited mobility, families with prams and travellers with luggage,” the spokesperson said.
“This is a complex project due to the limited construction space – we are continuing to develop a suitable methodology to ensure impacts to customers are kept to a minimum,” the spokesperson said.
“We recognise that there will be a short-term impact to bus services. However a shuttle bus service will be provided to maintain connection between Balmain East Wharf and Gladstone Park on Darling Street, Balmain. Ferry services will operate as normal during the construction period.”
The Balmain East Wharf interchange upgrade is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, providing modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.
Since the Transport Access Program began in April 2012, more than 450 projects are underway or have been completed.
