Sydney Metro At The NSW Major Projects Conference 2015

Sydney covers an area of more than 12,000 square kilometres across an extensive public transport network, delivering a wide variety of train and bus services to a population of approximately 4.8 million residents.

In the state’s latest plan to modernise the way transport is conducted within Australia’s largest city, the New South Wales government hopes to revolutionise the state’s rail network with the construction of the $2 billion Sydney Metro project.

The project aims to radically transform Sydney’s rail network into a state-of-the-art rail eco-system, with the introduction of Australia’s first European-style underground rail system, including efforts to extend certain rail lines to more than double their existing length.

In discussion of major infrastructure projects taking place across New South Wales, the 7th Annual NSW Major Projects Conference will be taking place on the 24th & 25th November 2015 to provide a forum for government and industry to review prominent transport options.

The conference will feature Tom Gellibrand, Deputy Project Director of the Sydney Metro project, who will provide an overview of the Sydney Metro Project, covering Sydney Metro City & SouthWest and NorthWest, in addition to a variety of speakers giving presentations on light rail, bus and road infrastructure projects.

The two day conference will be held at Doltone House and attracts close to 250 delegates each year. The conference will feature more than 25 key speakers from a wide range of industries and expertise, including representatives from municipality and private sectors.

Home to more than 937 kilometres of electrified track, Sydney’s rail network delivers more than 290 million customer journeys annually, facilitating in the economic mobility and thriving economic activity of the state.

The city features a vast range of wide-spanning rivers and mountainous terrain; a challenge the Sydney Metro aims to address in its construction. On most main lines, the upgraded rail infrastructure can be expected to provide a 10 minute saving on journey times.

The fully-fledged rapid transit system, the very first of its kind within Australia, will travel underneath Sydney CBD and increase the number of trains entering the city from 120 to about 200 during peak hour.

With Sydney’s population expected to grow by 1.6 million people over the next two decades, the Sydney Metro will deliver enough trains to meet future and current demand, delivering an extra 100,000 train customers per hour at peak.

Parts of the project are well under construction, with almost half the tunnelling complete on Sydney Metro’s Northwest which will open in the first half of 2019. These upgrades come in addition to the $1.6 billion Sydney Light Rail which aims to replace all buses on George Street.

The network has witnessed a steady stream of upgrades in recent years, with the South West Rail Link opening earlier this year and the Epping to Chatswood rail line opening in 2009. The Sydney metro aims to reform the rail network in the same way the introduction of electrification did in the 1930s.

The Moorebank Intermodal Terminal has also gained traction, with aims of doubling the proportion of freight moving through Port Botany to 28% by 2020, providing capacity for around 250,000 containers by 2017 and up to 1.05 million import-export containers by 2030.

The conference is an opportunity for industry leaders and government officials to share ideas on common challenges and acquire the latest information on major infrastructure projects shaping the development of New South Wales.

The 7th Annual New South Wales Major Projects Conference is being held at Doltone House in Hyde Park Centre on the 24th & 25th of November.
