Works have begun on the $96 million arch-shaped crossing of Whites Creek at Forty Bends.
Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the upgrade is part of a $250 million realignment of the Great Western Highway.
“This section of highway can be dangerous during poor weather and, in winter, the road has been often closed due to black ice,” Truss said.
“The reliable supply of goods is important part to business operation. By improving the reliability of this road during even the coldest, wettest winters, we will improve the competitiveness of producers, businesses, the state and, indeed, the nation.”
The upgrade will witness 2.5 kilometres of the road to be upgraded and divided into three lines.
Federal Member for Calare, John Cobb, said the crossing has endured substantial changes over time, impacting residents.
“It is great to see the new Whites Creek crossing at Forty Bends taking shape with 50 precast concrete arches, each weighing about 20 tonnes, being put in place,” Cobb said.
“The opening of the arch will allow the cold air to pass through rather than rising to the road surface, reducing the risk of black ice forming on the highway. It will also serve as a crossing for local fauna.”
Works on the crossing are expected to take about 12 weeks to complete.
