Barangaroo Redevelopment in Focus at the NSW Major Projects Conference 2015

With a significant $2.9 billion surplus over the 2014-15 period, the NSW government is demonstrating its commitment towards economic growth by increasing its spending on critical state infrastructure.

The NSW government will dedicate $61.5 billion over the next four years towards the revitalisation of existing areas through urban renewal, as well as through innovative strategies to modernise state infrastructure.

The 7th Annual NSW Major Projects Conference is being held on the 24th & 25th November 2015 at Doltone House for government and private sector to discuss prominent infrastructure and construction projects taking place within the state, placing a large focus on the importance of the urban redevelopment.

One such urban renewal project that has risen to prominence in recent years is the $6 billion Barangaroo Redevelopment of Sydney CBD’s inner north-western edge, which aims to redefine the Sydney Harbour area with over 22 hectares of newly accessible public domain, retail and commercial spaces

Split into three precincts: Barangaroo South, Barangaroo Central and Barangaroo Reserve, the project will provide space for over 24,000 permanent jobs, generating approximately $2 billion per annum towards the NSW economy.

Chief Executive of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, Craig van der Laan, will be presenting at the conference on the Barangaroo Redevelopment, which plans to showcase Sydney as Australia’s gateway to the world. Construction on the Barangaroo Ferry Hub is already underway and is expected to be completed by 2016.

The two day conference attracts close to 250 delegates each year, featuring more than 25 key speakers from across a wide range of industries and sectors, with presentations on urban renewal developments such as the Green Square Urban Renewal Project, Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, Parramatta North Urban Renewal Program and other significant urban renewal projects.

The revitalisation of existing areas through urban renewal is beginning to play a fundamental role in the way we reshape our cities for the future. UrbanGrowth NSW was established in 2013 to oversee the pipeline of complex large-scale urban revitalisation programs currently occurring within the state.

Urban renewal is important for a large number of reasons, most notably to provide the modern standards of living that our society has come to expect. This includes the delivery of services such as free public Wi-Fi, providing shorter walking distances between commercial and residential facilities, as well as providing increased safety and mobility through the use of open spaces.

In addition, the Barangaroo Redevelopment is the first of its size in the world to be ''climate positive'', meaning the site will generate more renewable energy than it uses, as well as recycle and export more water and waste than it uses and generates. The precinct will also generate enough solar energy to serve the public areas of the site.

The use of conventional cars will be discouraged with the allocation of electric car power stations in car parks, including the construction of a new $500 million train station in Barangaroo as part of the Sydney Metro project.

Expected to be completed in 2023, the Barangaroo redevelopment has an opportunity to continue Sydney’s dominance as Australia’s largest city, much in the same vein that stevedoring and shipping did for the region for more than 130 years.

The conference is an opportunity for industry leaders and government officials to share ideas on common challenges and acquire the latest information on major infrastructure projects shaping the development of New South Wales.

The 7th Annual New South Wales Major Projects conference is being held at Doltone House in Hyde Park on the 24th & 25th of November.
