Service Sector Economy Defines State Infrastructure Development at the NSW Major Projects Conference

Posted On October 12, 2015

New South Wales is home to Australia’s largest state population. With an estimated 7.5 million people currently living within the state, more than 60% of people are situated with the state’s capital of Sydney.

Under Access Economics baseline assumptions, the population of New South Wales is set to grow to almost 8.2 million in 2020. In addition, New South Wales is Australia’s largest state economy, estimated to be valued at more than $487 billion over the 2013-14 period.

The New South Wales government plans to commit $68.6 billion over the next four years to cope for these rapid changes in population, to provide critical infrastructure for the state’s most rapidly expanding business and residential areas.

Extending this discussion of the state’s latest infrastructure and major projects, the 7th Annual NSW Major Projects Conference will take place at Doltone House on the 24th & 25th November 2015 to provide a forum for government and industry to review prominent infrastructure and construction projects currently taking place within the state.

The two day conference attracts close to 250 delegates each year and continues to be the largest major projects and infrastructure conference in the state. Featuring more than 25 key speakers from across a wide range of industries and sectors, presenters such as Stephen Cornish, Program Director of the NorthConnex Project, will be present to provide an overview of the NSW and Federal governments’ plan to build, operate and maintain a tolled motorway.

A large focus has been placed on the redevelopment of the state’s transport network with the construction of the $11 billion Sydney Metro Project, Australia’s largest public transport project, which aims to radically transform Sydney’s rail network into a thriving eco-system. Tom Gellibrand, Deputy Project Director of the Sydney Metro project, will be providing an overview of the Sydney Metro Project, covering Sydney Metro City & SouthWest and NorthWest, as well as plans to build Australia’s first European style subway system.

Large scale urban renewal projects have also gained traction within the inner Sydney area, with the announcement of the $6 billion Barangaroo Redevelopment which aims to redefine the western edge of Sydney Harbour. Craig van der Laan, Chief Executive of the Barangaroo Delivery Authority, will be providing updates on the world’s foremost waterfront renewal project which aims to provide space for over 24,000 permanent jobs, a new permanent train station, as well as 11 hectares of newly accessible land for pedestrians and tourists alike.

With ambition to become the backbone of national interstate freight, the Inland Rail Project will provide a direct rail connection between the Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia once complete. Dale Budd, Senior Project Advisor of the Inland Rail project, ARTC, will be providing updates on the Inland Rail project which will shorten transit time between Melbourne and Brisbane to less than 24 hours, covering approximately 1,700 km with expectations of reducing rail costs by up to $10 per tonne.

Other major developments currently taking place within New South Wales include the WestConnex Project and Pacific Highway Upgrades, the Northern Beaches Hospital Redevelopment, as well as a variety of prominent projects ranging from private to public sectors.

The conference is an opportunity for industry leaders and government officials to share ideas on common challenges and acquire the latest information on major infrastructure projects shaping the development of New South Wales.

The 7th Annual New South Wales Major Projects conference is being held at Doltone House in Hyde Park Centre on the 24th & 25th of November.
