Sutherland Shire Council is not accepting tenders for the major upgrade of Alfords Point Road at Illawong.
Member for Miranda, Eleni Petinos, said the Alfords Point Bridge will be widened from two lanes to three lanes to improve traffic flow.
“Road users in the Sutherland Shire are set to benefit immensely from this upgrade, which will improve travel times and reduce congestion during peak periods,” Petinos said.
“The project will widen Alfords Point Road, a key road in southern Sydney, providing access across the Georges River for motorists, commuters, cyclists and freight vehicles.”
Work will include the installation of a central barrier, dividing the northbound and southbound carriageways to improve safety, in addition to new road surfacing.
The NSW government has allocated $300 million towards the completion of the project.
“This important work follows the duplication of Alfords Point Bridge completed in 2008 and the Alfords Point Bridge Northern Approach opened to traffic in late 2011,” Petinos said.
Works are expected to begin in the first half of 2016.
