Works are set to begin on the $103 million duplication of Tourle Street and Cormorant Road at Kooragang Island.
Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said NSW state and Federal governments have collectively committed more than $51 million to the project.
“This vital upgrade will improve traffic flow and cater for a forecast increase in traffic due to future urban development in Port Stephens, the expansion of Newcastle Airport and growth of industrial development on Kooragang Island,” Truss said.
Approximately 33,000 vehicles use the corridor each day to connect surrounding suburbs with Newcastle Airport.
The work should include the building of a new bridge to support the increasing number of freight moving in and out of Newcastle.
“Starting early work, before tenders are invited for major work, will ensure the successful tenderer can start work as soon as possible,” he said.
The work will also include the building of an underground barrier to prevent movement of old steelwork, as well as adjustments to Telstra services on Tourle Street and Ausgrid overhead power lines on Cormorant Road.
More than 3000 heavy vehicles utilise the road every day.
