The NSW government has approved a $57.5 million investment into a new multi-purpose commuter ferry hub in Barangaroo.
The marine construction firm McConnell Dowell has been selected to build the hub, which intends to offer public transport services during weekday peak periods and weekends.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, said the hub will increase public transport options for people travelling to and from Barangaroo.
“The NSW Government is getting on with the job of delivering the transport infrastructure needed to support the historic Barangaroo development,” Constance said.
“Barangaroo is expected to accommodate up to 23,000 office workers and attract up to 33,000 visitors per day when complete, and the ferry hub will be a vital connection to this key destination.”
The project will include the construction of two ferry wharves, seated waiting areas, weather protection as well as electronic ticketing via the existing Opal card system.
The Barangaroo Ferry Hub is one of three projects being delivered in the area, with work continuing on Wynyard Walk and the Wynyard Station upgrade.
“The assessment found that this project will take pressure off ferries at Circular Quay and King Street Wharf as well as improving public transport to the western and central CBD and harbour,” said a Department of Planning and Environment spokesperson.
The project will generate up to 60 jobs during construction and 18 jobs during operation.
The Ferry Hub is expected to open to customers in late 2016.
