The NSW Government has released a tender for technical advisor for Newcastle Light Rail in hopes of assisting the revitalisation of rail in Newcastle.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, made the announcement one fortnight after unveiling his proposal for a newly designed Wickham transport interchange.
The revitalisation of Newcastle aims to bring people back to the city centre by creating more employment opportunities, public space and better transport.
$460 million has already been committed to the program in close coordination with NSW Planning and Environment, Transport for NSW, Hunter Development Corporation and Newcastle City Council.
“Make no mistake, we are getting on with the job of delivering these key revitalisation projects for the people of Newcastle,” Mr Constance said.
“This tender represents the next step towards delivering light rail and follows geotechnical investigations that took place earlier this year.”
The tender calls all organisations involved in rail to fulfil the role of technical advisor. Tenderers must have demonstrable and specialist experience in engineering, municipality design and light rail systems.
“We are committed to getting light rail in Newcastle right. To do this, we need the right people to advise us on a range of technical studies that will feed into the planning process,” Mr Constance said.
“The delivery of a well-planned light rail network in Newcastle will help reignite confidence in the region, boosting jobs and visitor numbers.”
The NSW government hopes to further release future planning documents for the Newcastle Light Rail project in late 2015.
