Minister for Roads and Freight Duncan Gay announced work would start today on the $135 million 3.6 kilometre second stage of Schofields Road between Tallawong and Veron roads.

“We are progressively upgrading Schofields Road to four lanes between Windsor and Richmond roads with stage one opened in June,” Minister Gay said. “The NSW Government is fiercely determined to ease congestion on western Sydney roads.

These upgrades will do just that between the Rouse Hill and Marsden Park town centres, Schofields railway station and future North West Rail Link stations.

“The NSW Government fast tracked building work for stage two to start in August through a $135 million commitment including $70 million from the Housing Acceleration Fund.

“As well as widening the road to two lanes in each direction, new traffic lights will be built at the intersections of Hambledon, Boundary, Junction and Veron roads and at Railway Terrace.

“Safety for pedestrians and cyclists will also be improved with a shared path and new street lighting to be installed.

“Travel on public transport will be improved with bus priority measures installed to improve peak hour travel and new bus bays built enable safer travel.

“The upgraded road will pass under the Richmond railway line near Schofields station and connect to Veron Road. Member for Riverstone Kevin Conolly said stage two lanes were expected to open in the first half of 2017 with enough road corridor allocated for the road to be widened to six lanes in the future.

“Planning approval is in place for the third and final 2.5 kilometre stage of the Schofields Road upgrade from Veron Road down South Street to Richmond Road and detailed design is nearing completion,” Mr Conolly said.

“The NSW Government has provided $500,000 this financial year to continue planning stage three which will include an extension of Schofields Road from Vernon Road, across Eastern Creek to Carnarvon Road.”
