NSW records highest housing approvals in a decade

Minister for Planning Pru Goward today welcomed news that more than 50,000 new homes had been approved in NSW in the 2013/14 financial year – the highest in a decade.

Housing approvals this month tip the total for the year over the 50,000 mark and demonstrates the Government’s focus on housing affordability.

Ms Goward said that this would be welcome news for people looking to buy a new home or investment property.

“This is yet another strong month of home approvals as we plan for a growing NSW,” Ms Goward said.

“We know our State will need more homes for the future and the planning for that has already begun.

“NSW is the place to be if you are looking to buy or build a new home with the Baird Government’s policies paving the way for record home approvals.

“It’s another indication of the strength of our state’s economy.”

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released today revealed this was another bumper month for housing in NSW:

• NSW recorded 4,305 dwelling approvals
• NSW approvals for this month are up 24 per cent on the monthly average (3,481) since the Liberal and Nationals Government came to office.
• NSW approvals for this month are 62 per cent higher than the monthly average of the last five years under the previous government (2,656).
• Average monthly NSW approvals since the current government came to office is 3,481, which is 31 per cent higher than the monthly average of the last government.

Ms Goward said it was also good news for jobs.

“A booming building industry means more work for tradespeople and the businesses who supply them,” Ms Goward said.
