Sydney's Green Square town centre gets the green light

The City of Sydney has been given the go-ahead for a new town centre at the $8 billion Green Square project.

The NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure has signed off on the City of Sydney’s plans for the new commercial, retail and cultural hub, which will bring in 8500 new jobs and 3700 new houses.
“We have budgeted $440 million for Green Square on an array of community facilities and infrastructure including roads, utilities and drainage, a state-of-the-art library, open spaces and an aquatic centre, as well as much-needed facilities such as childcare and a community hall,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

The Green Square village redevelopment, less than four kilometres from the city’s central business district, is aimed at becoming a contemporary example of green living.

The redevelopment area spans 278 hectares over the suburbs of Beaconsfield, Zetland and parts of Rosebery, Alexandria and Waterloo. By 2030 Green Square is expected to attract 40,000 new residents and 22,000 new workers.

City of Sydney will construct the public infrastructure for the town centre, which covers 14 hectares, while private developers will build the apartments, shops and office buildings around a new plaza.
The buildings will vary from three to 28 storeys. Funding help for the public infrastructure will come from the developers, who are contributing an additional $89.5 million.

Cr Moore described the new town centre as “different” to others, which are built on the surburban fringe.

“It will be built just a few kilometres from the centre of Sydney, providing homes and jobs in a location that is fast becoming a really great place to work, live and play.”
