The Hon Barry O’Farrell MP
Premier of NSW
Minister for Western Sydney
NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Health Minister Jillian Skinner today announced new funding to plan the future redevelopment of Sutherland Hospital.
The NSW Government will spend $400,000 planning for a major redevelopment of Sutherland Hospital, which would include up to 60 new inpatient beds and a refurbishment of the emergency department.
“The NSW Government is committed to upgrading our hospitals, which suffered terribly through 16 years of Labor neglect,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“Our highly skilled and dedicated hospital staff deserve to work in the best possible environments.
“The people of the Sutherland Shire rightly expect their hospital will have world-class facilities to match the high levels of care delivered by staff – today we take an important step to delivering this major redevelopment.
“This is a great day for the families who rely on Sutherland Hospital. I congratulate our hard-working Liberals MPs in the Shire and our candidate for Miranda, Brett Thomas, who have all lobbied hard on behalf of their communities for this funding to be made available.”
Mr O’Farrell and Mrs Skinner were joined at the announcement at Sutherland Hospital by Mr Thomas and Sutherland Shire Liberal MPs Mark Speakman (Cronulla), Melanie Gibbons (Menai) and Lee Evans (Heathcote).
Mrs Skinner said with the funding now available, planning work would commence immediately.
“The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Board has determined the future clinical needs of Sutherland Hospital, based on advice from the district’s Clinical and Quality Council,” Mrs Skinner said.
“Today’s announcement means the Local Health District can complete the business case and submit the project to the Ministry of Health and the NSW Treasury for endorsement.
“Today is a vital first step on the journey towards a state-of-the-art hospital serving the Sutherland Shire and I am delighted to share the announcement with the Premier and my parliamentary colleagues, who so passionately communicate the needs of their communities to me.”
Last week, Mrs Skinner announced the successful tenderer for the design and construction of the Sutherland Hospital car park, which will increase the total number of staff and public car spaces on-site from about 700 to more than 1000.
