The Hon Barry O’Farrell MP
Premier of NSW
Minister for Western Sydney
NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Health Minister Jillian Skinner today announced new funding to plan the next stage of the St George Hospital redevelopment.
The NSW Government will spend $800,000 to allow planning for a major redevelopment - the next step after the $39 million new emergency department promised and being delivered by the NSW Liberals & Nationals.
“The NSW Government is committed to upgrading our hospitals and providing world-class facilities for our hospital staff and patients,” said Mr O’Farrell, who was also joined at the announcement by Liberal MPs Mark Coure (Oatley) and John Flowers (Rockdale).
“We are getting on with the job of delivering a state-of-the-art St George Hospital for families in this region.
“St George Hospital was forgotten by Labor in its 16 years in government. Earlier this year I was delighted to turn the first sod for the hospital’s new emergency department and I’m pleased now to be able to announce funding to start planning for the next stage of work.”
Mrs Skinner said the $800,000 allocated to St George Hospital would allow planning for a major redevelopment.
“The NSW Government is currently funding a $39 million redevelopment of the St George Hospital emergency department, which is expected to be completed in the second half of next year,” Mrs Skinner said.
“The redevelopment of St George Hospital will accommodate an expansion of high priority clinical services such as intensive care, high dependency and cardiac care, as well as new operating theatres. There will also be significant enhancement of inpatient wards.”
The South Eastern Sydney Local Health District Board will determine details of the development based on the future clinical needs of St George Hospital and advice from the district’s Clinical and Quality Council.
“This funding means the South Eastern Local Health District can complete a business case for the redevelopment of St George Hospital and submit the project to the Ministry of Health and the NSW Treasury for endorsement,” Mrs Skinner said.
“Today we take another exciting step on the journey towards a world-class hospital for the St George district.
“It is a real pleasure for me to share today’s announcement with the Premier and my parliamentary colleagues, who so passionately advocate on behalf of their communities,” she said.
