Minister for Western Sydney
A 300 metre long, 30 metre wide pedestrian promenade along Sydney Harbour has been given planning approval as part of the city’s Barangaroo redevelopment, NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Minister for Planning and Infrastructure Brad Hazzard announced today.
“This part of Sydney Harbour was off-limits to the public for decades and we have now been given a look at how the people will be able to enjoy this space once the Barangaroo Central precinct is complete,” Mr O’Farrell said.
“Returning this part of the Sydney Harbour waterfront to the public is one of the key benefits of the Barangaroo Central precinct.
“The harbour will play a vital role in the overall redevelopment of Barangaroo and the central precinct is set to be a hub for public open space and enjoyment of the waterfront.
“The new $27 million foreshore walkway will be the next step in completing a ‘missing link’ in a continuous 14-kilometre harbourside walkway from Woolloomooloo all the way to the Anzac Bridge.
“The promenade will include a tree lined, sandstone walkway with a lowered boardwalk that will give the public access to the water’s edge.
“A pontoon in the Northern Cove will provide small boat dropâ€off access for pleasure craft and water taxis and the stone work will mimic the 1860s sandstone walling already in the area.”
Mr Hazzard said the promenade will be a key feature of the Barangaroo Central precinct, with work expected to begin by the middle of next year.
“It is easy to imagine just how popular the boardwalk will be on a sunny weekend, as people enjoy this increased access to our wonderful harbour,” Mr Hazzard said.
“The existing temporary walkway at Barangaroo is already attracting about 21,000 people a month and there is no doubt the new foreshore promenade will be even more popular.
“The promenade will create a quality connection between the Headland Park and Barangaroo South, with public access to the foreshore extending continuously to King Street Wharf and beyond.
“The approved project also includes an option to create a temporary public domain area on the east of the site that will be available for casual sports and picnicking as well as the potential to host public events.”
The Department of Planning and Infrastructure’s assessment found that the project was in line with the overall planning strategy for the precinct and imposed a number of conditions to ensure any residual noise, traffic and transport impacts are appropriately managed.
