Central to Eveleigh Revitalisation

The NSW Government has called for expressions of interest to revitalise and expand Sydney’s CBD by redeveloping land and airspace in the Central to Eveleigh rail corridor.

The corridor extends for approximately three kilometres from the Goulburn Street car park in the Sydney CBD to Macdonaldtown rail station. It includes Central and Redfern stations, Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh Rail Yards and airspace above railway lines.

Sydney is set to  join global cities including New York, London and Paris which have transformed their inner city rail transport corridors to vibrant urban precincts.

The Central to Eveleigh corridor was identified in the recently released draft Metropolitan Strategy as a key driver to keep Sydney as Australia’s number one city, and global gateway. The City of Sydney has also identified the potential for significant redevelopment over the railway line in its Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan.

The redevelopment will preserve access for future essential transport needs, including the second harbour rail crossing. It could  also lead to the upgrade of Central and Redfern stations into world class transport facilities.

Heritage assets within the precinct will be conserved, with adaptive re-use which preserves heritage values into the 21st Century.

The precinct  could become a hub for jobs in the education, health, technology and creative industries, with a mix of new residential development including student and affordable housing. Tourism and other commercial opportunities, so close to the best served infrastructure in the city, will also be attractive to the market.

The NSW Government will consult with the community and key stakeholders in the second half of 2013 to obtain feedback on the precinct development strategy.

The NSW Government believes there will be strong national and international interest in the renewal of the corridor.The corridor redevelopment strategy is led by the NSW Government’s new development corporation UrbanGrowth NSW, with input from key transport agencies.
